I jailbroke a Kindle Scribe to build a handwriting AI assistant

By ·

I jailbroke my Kindle Scribe and built an app for it called Pen Pal. I write a question on the screen with the pen, tap a star, and an AI assistant writes the answer underneath in handwriting. It took about three weeks, around a full-time job, and I have never written a line of code by hand.

You can watch it answer a question on the Pen Pal page. Here is the one-minute film:

Why would anyone do this to a Kindle?

I had two things that didn’t know about each other.

One was a Kindle Scribe I barely used. The other was Hermes, a personal AI assistant I run on my own server and love.

I’ve always written on paper. The trouble with a notebook is that it can’t answer a question. The Scribe is the best thing I own to write on, and it couldn’t talk to the smartest thing I own. That seemed like a waste of a good pen.

What does Pen Pal do?

Seven things so far:

  • It answers handwritten questions. I wrote “Why doesn’t the ISS fall down?” and got back a paragraph explaining that it is falling, all the time, and keeps missing the Earth.
  • It shows my day. When I open it, today’s meetings and to-dos are on the page, with a short note about the day.
  • It gives every meeting and task its own page, with prep notes waiting at the top.
  • It turns a drawn box into a task. I draw a small square next to a line and that line becomes a to-do.
  • It keeps my to-do app in step. When I tick a task on the Kindle, it’s ticked in my to-do app as well.
  • It carries unfinished tasks over to the next day, and breaks big ones into steps.
  • It remembers. Every page is backed up, so it can answer from my own earlier notes and point me back to the page.

There is no keyboard anywhere in this.

How does it work, in plain English?

There are three layers, and I only ever see the top one.

  1. The page. The app on the Kindle records what the pen writes.
  2. The reader. My server turns that handwriting into text.
  3. The assistant. Hermes answers, and the answer travels back to the Kindle, where it’s written out a line at a time.

If the wifi drops, the question waits in a queue and goes out when the connection comes back.

How did I build it without knowing how to code?

With Claude. I described what I wanted, Claude wrote the code, and I tested every version on the real Kindle and reported back what was wrong.

That added up to 205 saved changes between September 12 and October 2, 2026. I build for 15 to 20 hours a week, around my day job.

My job was to be a very picky customer. I knew what I wanted the pen to feel like, and I kept sending it back until it did.

What went wrong?

Plenty. The best example is the eraser.

The Scribe’s pen has an eraser on the back end, like a pencil. Pen Pal could tell where the pen was, and had no idea which end was touching the screen. Rubbing something out only drew more lines over it.

We tried five fixes. All five failed. The sixth worked because it stopped asking the screen and listened to the pen itself.

Then it turned out the eraser was only painting white over the ink. The words looked gone, and the assistant was still reading them. So “erase” had to learn to delete.

After that, erasing while a question was being sent locked me out of my own notebook. That took one more day.

Six tries for an eraser. Pencils have had this figured out for a while.

What does it cost?

What Cost
Kindle Scribe Already owned, and gathering dust
Server for the assistant $9 a month
AI tools, across everything I build About $50 a month

That is roughly $60 a month in total, and it covers every project I’m working on. The server is the only bill that exists because of Pen Pal.

Should you jailbreak your own Kindle?

Think about it first. Three things I’d want a friend to know:

  • It can void your warranty. Amazon didn’t design the Kindle for this.
  • A software update can undo it. The methods that work depend on your Kindle’s model and software version, and Amazon closes them over time.
  • Don’t risk your only e-reader. Mine was barely used, so I had little to lose.

If you do go ahead, look for a current guide for your exact model before you touch anything.

What’s next?

Pen Pal works. I’m still building on it, and I’m writing down what happens as I go. If you want to see where it ends up, follow along on LinkedIn.

Quick answers

Can a Kindle Scribe run your own apps?
Yes, once it is jailbroken. A jailbroken Scribe can run software Amazon never put on it, including an app you built yourself. Whether your Scribe can be jailbroken depends on its model and software version.
Do you need to know how to code to build something like this?
I don't know how to code. I described what I wanted to Claude, tested each version on the real Kindle, and reported what was wrong. It took 205 saved changes over about three weeks.
Can I download Pen Pal?
Not yet. It is a personal build that runs on my own Kindle and my own server.
What does it cost to run?
The assistant lives on a rented server that costs $9 a month. Across everything I build, I spend about $60 a month on AI tools and that server.
